Chemistry has been an integral part of RPI since its founding in 1824. This deep-rooted history reflects the enduring practicality of the chemical sciences—one of the most application-driven fields of natural science. Our legacy traces back to RPI’s founder, Amos Eaton, a pioneering geologist (or "geochemist") and the Institute’s first chemistry instructor. Eaton’s mission—to apply science to the “common purposes of life”—continues to inspire our department today.
Two centuries later, we stand at a pivotal moment in history. Chemistry is central to addressing many of the world’s most pressing challenges. From developing sustainable energy and clean water technologies to creating life-saving medicines and biodegradable materials, chemistry drives transformative innovation. It plays a vital role in combating climate change through carbon capture, green chemistry, and more efficient industrial processes. In short, chemistry helps us understand, improve, and reimagine the world around us.
At RPI, our department offers a rigorous and comprehensive chemistry education within the broader context of a holistic college experience. Our undergraduates engage deeply with chemical theory and practice, gaining hands-on experience with state-of-the-art instrumentation. Students can participate in cutting-edge research throughout the academic year (for credit) and during the summer (with stipend support) across a wide range of topics.
Beyond the lab and classroom, we foster an educational environment that emphasizes leadership, collaboration, communication, and mentorship. As a result, our graduates are well-prepared for diverse and impactful careers—whether in industry, graduate studies, the health professions, or beyond.
We invite you to explore our department website and connect with us to discover how a chemistry education at RPI can prepare you to help shape the future.
